Dr JAMES SUMNER is a lecturer at the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of Manchester. He has produced guided walks and public talks on local topics for various groups including the Manchester Science Festival, Manchester Histories Festival and Cafe Scientifique. His research looks at how experts and non-experts have communicated scientific and technological ideas in various historical situations, mostly involving computers or beer. Dr Sumner will round off our season of events with a talk to celebrate the centenary of Alan Turing’s birth, with special reference to the work in Manchester of this brilliant mathematician and pioneer of computing science.
