Accessible and Mooving: The Manchester CowParade

Illuminata: The Bovine Bibliophile - The Friends of the John Rylands cow

The world's largest public art event arrived in Manchester this summer and the Friends of the John Rylands took the opportunity to be involved and, thanks to generous contributions from Community Chest, was able to buy its own cow for the parade. Illuminata is now going to be sold for charity at the gala auction.

Why cows?

According to the CowParade Web site, "There is really no other animal that can adequately substitute for the cow and produce the level of artistic accomplishment evident in this moo-seum. The surface area and bone structures are just right, as well as the height and length. Our cow sculptures, created by acclaimed artist Pascal Knapp, were designed specifically to be an art canvass and are striking works of art on their own. Further, no other animal can be transformed into something else entirely, yet retain its identity."

That said, the CowParade's raison d'étre is to be both artistic and accessible. For these reasons, the Friends of the John Rylands are delighted to be associated with the CowParade: Manchester 2004.
