The Friends have awarded £1000 towards the purchase of the papers of the Victorian novelist George Gissing (1857-1903).
Educated at Alderley Edge, Gissing won a scholarship to Owens College to study classics. Today he is best known for this novel New Grub Street (1891). The Friends Committee enthusiastically supports the Library's efforts to acquire the Gissing papers as they are clearly important to Manchester and to the University, and to be of wide popular appeal.
